Private Thomas John McKinley, originally of Tasmania, enlisted with the 8th Battalion, 6th Reinforcement, A.I.F at Broadmeadows Camp in Melbourne, Vic. on March 8, 1915. McKinley's unit embarked from Port Melbourne on board HMAT A62 Wandilla on June 17, 1915. He served in Egypt, the Dardanelles and France and was killed in action Sept. 11, 1916

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
