Thomas Henry Alcock, clerk of Waverley, Sydney, N.S.W., enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces, 1915, embarked from Sydney on board HMAT SS Makarini, 1 April 1916 and served with the 3rd Battalion, 16th Reinforcement in Egypt, 1916, France and Belgium, 1916-1917. After being wounded Nov. 1917 he was a patient in military hospitals in France and England until returning to Australia 18 Jan. 1919

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
