Private Peter R Hall, printer of West Perth, Western Australia embarked from Fremantle on board Transport A55 Kyarra, 14 Dec. 1914. He served with the 2nd Stationary Hospital, Australian Imperial Forces during the Gallipoli campaign, Apr.-May 1915 and with the 7th Field Ambulance as a stretcher bearer on the Somme front near Bapaume in northern France, Oct. 1918

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
