Norman Thomas Gilroy embarked for Egypt on the transport Hessen (later Transport HMAT Bulla), Feb. 1915 and served as a naval wireless operator on the Hessen off Gallipoli and Imbros before the ship returned to England, 4 July 1915. He returned to Melbourne Aug. 1915, subsequently became a priest and served as Roman Catholic Archbishop of Sydney from 1940 to 1971
