Joseph Henry Pye, a foreman baker of Burwood, Sydney, was born in Mudgee, N.S.W. He enlisted in 1914 at the age of 42 and embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A35 Berrima, 22 Dec. 1914. He served with the 5th Divisional Train, 5th Field Bakery in Egypt and France. Warrant Officer on enlistment, Honorary Captain on NR.

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
