Private J. A. Palmer of Raymond Terrace, N.S.W. enlisted at West Maitland 8th December 1915 and served with the 34th Battalion, Australian Imperial Forces in France. He was wounded 10 March 1917, gassed 17 April 1918, returned to Sydney 25 February 1919 and was discharged 17 April 1919

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
