John Joyce, storekeeper of Hawthorne, Victoria was born in Armagh, Ireland. He enlisted aged 28 on 27 July 1915 and embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A71 Nestor, 11 Oct. 1915. He served with the 7th Battalion, Australian Imperial Forces in northern France and Belgium. He was promoted to lance-corporal on 2 Aug. 1916, was wounded in action on 17 Aug. 1916, invalided from France to England on 21 Aug. 1916 and returned to Melbourne on HMAT Miltiades, 2 June 1917

A birthday treat(y) signals a short-lived period of world peace

Being an ardent pacifist I was delighted to discover that the Treaty of Versailles was signed on 28 June – my birthday!  An examination of the souvenir programme, Victory Celebrations (Signing of Peace), revealed a route  that was to pass in front of the original Mitchell Library.  Further searching of the Library’s collections revealed this magnificent photo of the event.
