Henry George Parkes, a coachtrimmer of Enfield, New South Wales was born in Monaro and enlisted in the A.I.F. aged 27, 14 Sept. 1916. He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A19 Afric on 3 November 1916 and served with the 59th Battalion, 7th Reinforcement in France. He returned to Australia on HT Port Lyttelton, 10 June 1919

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
