Arthur John Moore Burrowes embarked from Sydney, NSW, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 19 Dec. 1917 and served with the 18th Battalion, 21st Reinforcement in France where he was wounded 8 Aug. 1918. He was treated in various hospitals in England before returning to Sydney Feb.-Mar. 1919. He was in Randwick Military Hospital until the end of 1919, and lived until 1969

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
