A.G. Fletcher of Bradley's Butchery, Redfern, New South Wales was the step-brother of Private R. T. Wharton, who served with D Company, 36th Battalion, 9th Brigade, A.I.F. in England and France, 1916-1919. Papers, being mainly letters from Raymond T. Wharton, including R. T. Wharton's comments on the conduct of World War I, other family letters, photographs and newscuttings

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
