Alex Halden (Joe) Miller papers mainly relating to the Gilgandra Coo-ee Recruitment March, New South Wales, 1912-1921, 1939. In 1915, local residents of Gilandra, NSW, William Hitchen, Captain of the Rifle Association, Joe Miller, a well known businessman and John Robert Lee a Lay preacher and share farmer organised a recruiting march from Gilandra to Sydney. The plan was to march to the next town or settlement during the day and to hold recruiting meetings in the evening when able bodied men would be encouraged to join up. They were known as the 'Gilgandra Coo-ees'

Trove solves a family mystery

All the WW1 records for my great grand uncle showed he lived in Hanover St, Lidcombe. However, this street no longer exists. Searching in Trove I discovered the street had been renamed to honour another soldier, Private Frederick Doodson who was killed on Anzac Day landing at the Dardanelles. The digitised newspapers helped me to unravel a mystery in the family history. Trove supplied the missing piece to the puzzle and also the reason why the street name was changed, and the wonderful recognition for the local soldier who died.
