Personal information:

Alex Halden (Joe) Miller papers mainly relating to the Gilgandra Coo-ee Recruitment March, New South Wales, 1912-1921, 1939. In 1915, local residents of Gilandra, NSW, William Hitchen, Captain of the Rifle Association, Joe Miller, a well known businessman and John Robert Lee a Lay preacher and share farmer organised a recruiting march from Gilandra to Sydney. The plan was to march to the next town or settlement during the day and to hold recruiting meetings in the evening when able bodied men would be encouraged to join up. They were known as the 'Gilgandra Coo-ees'

An Anzac and some of his friends. "The Donks"
'An Anzac and some of his friends. "The Donks"'

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East. See pic.
