A. D. Gordon was a private in the 1st Field Ambulance, Australian Army Medical Corps, 18 Oct. 1914 to Oct. 1915. He embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board Transport A14 Euripides on 20 Oct. 1914. He was invalided and returned to Sydney 6 Dec. 1916 where he was discharged

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
