Stories from our WW1 collections

Newly commissioned articles by researchers, historians and curators provide insights into the collections and themes which reflect Austraila's experiences of the War.

Our World War I collections contain many stories – the personal accounts found in diaries, maps that document the progress of the war, newspapers and ephemera that reflect what was happening on the home front, life captured through the photographer’s lens.

Look for additions to this section as new themes are developed and stories are written.

The European War, ca. 1914-1918 / William Henry Dyson
All’s fair in love and war ...

Don’t know why, but I love this image ... Life goes on despite the weary body language of both the Aussie soldier and the European woman. Both seem sick and tired of their situations; but the eye contact still seems to be intense in the middle of all that mayhem. See pic.
