Lieutenant William Christian Beeken, was born 1st May 1889. The 25 year old from Bexley enlisted on 3 September 1914 and was allotted to the 3rd Battalion F Company. The Company embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A14 Euripides on 20 October 1914. Beeken was wounded in action on 7 May 1915 and subsequently killed in action, 6 August 1915.

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
