W. E. Gillett enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces 6 Mar. 1916, at Perth, Western Australia, was promoted to lance-corporal Feb. 1917 and later to sergeant. He served in France from Dec. 1917, probably with D company, 21st Battalion. He transferred to a clerical position in 1917 and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 1919. He served at the A.I.F. Headquarters, London from Feb. 1919 to May 1920, returning to Australia 30 July 1920

Keeping the secrets of battles fought, won and lost, makes for very clinical correspondence from ‘over there’. Reading between the lines about the realities of life in the armed forces must have been very difficult for the recipients of such scant morsels of information. It isn’t exactly a wordy message but I am sure it would have been happily received back home with the first line kept intact. See postcard.
