Sergeant on enlist, Lieutenant on NR, embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A48 Seang Bee, 11 Febr. 1915 and served in the 13th and 45th Battalions. He took part in campaigns in the Dardanelles, France and Belgium and was wounded in action in France, 6 Aug. 1916. He was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, Mar. 1917. He returned to Australia 13 Mar. 1918
