Farrier-Sergeant T. E. Goodwin of Stanmore, Sydney served as a farrier with the 2nd Battery, 1st Field Artillery Brigade, A.I.F. 24 August 1914-4 December 1918 in Gallipoli and France. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre in Belgium on 6 Feb. 1918; Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board Transport A8 Argyllshire on 18 October 1914

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
