Private Signaller S. Norris, an Englishman, enlisted in Melbourne on 29 January 1915 and served in the First Expeditionary Force, Second Brigade, 16th Platoon "D" Company, in Egypt and Gallipoli. He was wounded, returned to Australia and discharged there in July 1916. He later returned to England as assistant canteen-sergeant on the troopship Nestor, Nov. 1916

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
