Brothers - Private Robert Rex Nixon, a clerk of Neutral Bay, Sydney, New South Wales, was born in Adelaide, South Australia and enlisted at Liverpool aged 18 years, 6 May 1915. He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A63 Karoola, 16 June 1915 and served in the 4th, 56th and 61st Battalion, 21 May 1915-May 1919. He returned to Australia on the Port Macquarie, 27 May 1919

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
