R. J. Drummond, a plumber of Windsor, Victoria enlisted on 11 September 1916 aged 30 years and embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 11 May 1917. He served as a private with supply units in England, France and Belgium, notably the 5th Australian Motor Transport Company and the 21st Battalion, 19th Reinforcement, returning to Australia on HT Morvada, 4 Jan. 1919

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
