Noel Hunter Sherrie, draughtsman of Sydney, New South Wales was born in Albury and enlisted at the age of 22, 17 Jan. 1916. He embarked from Sydney on board RMS Malwa on 22 July 1916 and served in Egypt. He was wounded at Gaza, 4 May 1917 and taken prisoner by the Turks. He died while a prisoner of war at Damascus Hospital, Turkey, 8 June 1917. Includes 2 letters from Noel Hunter Sherrie, 6th Light Horse Camel Corps, 31 Dec. 1916 and 30 Jan. 1917

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
