Leslie Dunlop, a medical practitioner of Ipswich, Queensland was 27 years old when he enlisted, 27 Aug. 1914. He embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board Transport A14 Euripides, 20 Oct. 1914 and served at Gallipoli where he was a captain in the 1st Field Ambulance, 1st Australian Division, ANZAC. He was wounded in action, 9 Aug. 1915 and mentioned in despatches, 27 Apr. 1916. He returned to Australia on the Kanowna, 10 Mar. 1916

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
