Kenneth George Binnie, station manager of Quirindi, New South Wales enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces, 6 Jan. 1916, aged 22. He embarked for England on board HMAT A8 Argyllshire, 11 May 1916 and reached the front near Armentieres, France in December 1916. He was made a Lieutenant in the 26th Battery of the 3rd Australian Division, 19 Apr. 1918 and returned to New South Wales on HT Anchises, Feb. 1919

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
