Corporal J. D. Wilson, Blacksmith of Shepparton, Victoria, served with Headquarters Pioneers, 37th Battalion, later 39th Battalion, A.I.F. served in France and Flanders in the region of Armentieres, Houplines and later the Somme, sometimes attached to Transports from 22 Nov. 1916 to 9 Nov. 1918, when he was invalided to England. He returned to Australia 16 May 1919 on HMAT Shropshire

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
