James Stuart MacDonald, 1878-1952, artist and gallery director of Melbourne, Victoria, enlisted aged 36, 9 Sept. 1914 and embarked from Melbourne, Victoria with the 5th Battalion, on board Transport A3 Orvieto, 21 Oct. 1914. He was wounded at Gallipoli, 26 Apr. 1915 and in 1916 worked in Records, in the Army Pay Corps in England before being sent to France 14 June 1918 as a war artist. He returned to Australia on S.S. Makura, 21 Dec. 1918

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
