Irene Victoria Read, 1880-1972, was active in the Australian Comforts Fund and the the Women's Australian National Services during World Wars I and II and many other associations and charities including the Rachel Forster Hospital, the Havilah Church of England Children's Home, and the New South Wales Society for Crippled Children. In 1915 she joined her husband Dr. William Read who was attached to No.2 Australian General Hospital in Cairo.

A birthday treat(y) signals a short-lived period of world peace

Being an ardent pacifist I was delighted to discover that the Treaty of Versailles was signed on 28 June – my birthday!  An examination of the souvenir programme, Victory Celebrations (Signing of Peace), revealed a route  that was to pass in front of the original Mitchell Library.  Further searching of the Library’s collections revealed this magnificent photo of the event.
