Private, enlisted 14 Sep. 1914 and served as a trooper with the 6th Australian Light Horse Regiment at Gallipoli, 1915 and in Egypt, 1915-1917. Private; Age 36, married. From June 1915 - Jan. 1916 he was absent from the regiment through illness, and after returning to hospital Jan. 1917 was invalided home.

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
