Hector Brewer of Newtown, Sydney enlisted 24 August 1914 at West Maitland. He joined the H. Company, 2nd Battalion as a private and was later transferred to the 54th Battalion, 14th Brigade. He served in the Gallipoli campaign and in France and Belgium and was promoted corporal in 1916 and lieutenant in 1917. He was discharged from the army Apr. 1919. Private on enlistment, Lieutenant on NR. Departure from Australia, war experiences in Egypt, Greece and Gallipoli

A birthday treat(y) signals a short-lived period of world peace

Being an ardent pacifist I was delighted to discover that the Treaty of Versailles was signed on 28 June – my birthday!  An examination of the souvenir programme, Victory Celebrations (Signing of Peace), revealed a route  that was to pass in front of the original Mitchell Library.  Further searching of the Library’s collections revealed this magnificent photo of the event.
