Private on enlistment, Lance Coporal on Nominal Roll; He enlisted in Aug. 1915 at the age of 23 and embarked from Sydney on board HMAT Mooltan, 11 Dec. 1915. He served as a private with the 1st Battalion, 1st Infantry Brigade in Egypt, Jan. - Apr. 1916, France and Belgium, Apr. - Nov. 1916 and Nov. 1917 - Jan. 1919. He was injured in the field 23 Oct. 1916 and sent to England where he remained till 27 Oct. 1917. He was hospitalised with influenza in France, May 1918 and returned to Australia on board City of Poona, Mar. 1919.

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
