Private Gordon. T. Birkbeck was a trooper of the 1st Australian Machine Gun Squadron, Anzac Mounted Division. He embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A16 Star Of Victoria. He enlisted at Moree, 30 June 1915 and was discharged 17 Aug. 1919. He fought in the Gallipoli campaign, upper Egypt Senussi Campaign, Sinai peninsular and the Palestine campaign until 31 Jan. 1919

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
