Private E. J. Flanagan served in France with the 57th Battalion, 7th Reinforcement. Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A19 Afric on 3 November 1916. He was wounded at Bullecourt, and later sent back to England with trench fever. He was invalided back to Australia on the Nestor
