Signaller Edward.M. Luders of Newcastle, NSW enlisted 27 Aug. 1914 and served with the 1st Battalion at Gallipoli and in northern France and Belgium. He was awarded the Military Medal, 24 June 1917 for work at Posieres, promoted to Lance Corporal 11 Nov. 1916, wounded 5 Oct. 1917 and discharged 8 Sept. 1918

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
