Letters from a Queensland army nurse 1915-1917, being a transcription by Pat Richardson of her aunt Edith Florence Avenell's letters. Edith Florence Avenell of Gympie, Queensland enlisted in the A.I.F. as a nurse, aged 25 years, 14 June 1915. She embarked with the No 1 Australian General Hospital unit from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT Mooltan, 15 May 1915 and was detailed for transport duty on HT Borda. She nursed at No. 13 Hospital, Boulogne, France and No. 2 Australian Auxillery General Hospital, Southall. She returned to Australia on HT Euripides, 21 July 1917

Keeping the secrets of battles fought, won and lost, makes for very clinical correspondence from ‘over there’. Reading between the lines about the realities of life in the armed forces must have been very difficult for the recipients of such scant morsels of information. It isn’t exactly a wordy message but I am sure it would have been happily received back home with the first line kept intact. See postcard.
