Sergeant Darrell John Partridge of Dungog, N.S.W. enlisted on Aug. 28 1914 and from July 10 1915 served with the Australian Army Medical Corps of the 2nd Battalion at Gallipoli and in France. He was promoted to Corporal on Aug. 12 1916 and to Sergeant on Jan. 24 1917. He was awarded the Military Medal at the Battle of Bullecourt and was discharged on Nov. 29 1917

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
