Bertie Arthur Wood, born in England and a gasfitter of Junee, New South Wales, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on 14 April 1916. He was a corporal with the 56th Battalion, 2nd Reinforcements, Australian Imperial Forces, in Egypt. He did not see active service, and was discharged after losing the sight of one eye, returning to Australia 17 August 1916

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
