Corporal Benjamin Harris, seaman of North Fitzroy, Vic., enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces on 3 May 1915 and embarked on HMAT A11 'Ascanius' from Melbourne, 10 Nov. 1915. He served in the 8th Field Ambulance in the Canal Zone, Egypt to June 1916 and in France and Belgium to 30 Jan. 1916, as cook and stretcher bearer.

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
