Private on enrol, Lance Corp on NR - Military medal, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius, 10 Nov. 1915. He was a stretcher bearer with the 8th Infantry Brigade, 8th Field Ambulance Sections B and C of the Australian Imperial Forces. He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery and returned to Australia 7 Feb. 1919 enlisted 6 May 1915.

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
