Corporal A. H. Smith, clerk of Castlemaine, Victoria, aged 26, embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A27 Southern, 20 Oct. 1914 with the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade, A.I.F. He served in Egypt, Gallipoli, France and Belgium. In 1919 he served on S.S. Willochra, repatriating prisoners of war and returned to Australia 23 Sept. 1919. Captain on NR

Taken by official war photographer Frank Hurley, this image and its title are equally captivating  because it's such an ordinary photo of a young man looking after his animals in such  extraordinary circumstances. I can just imagine him saying something like 'Must be almost time to feed the donks' - an unremarkable job if he was at home, perhaps he was a farmer. Something else again at War in the Middle East.
